Psychology is the art and science of understanding who we are. Why do we feel, think and act in specific ways? What are our attitudes, beliefs and values and why are they important? What motivates us? Why are some relationships easy, while others require intensive work? Why does it sometimes feel like we're stuck on a path that we don't want to be on, yet we don't know how to re-route? Or we know how to re-route, but something is stopping us from crossing the boundary onto the new path? Some of us (perhaps a few) are fortunate enough to have untroubled lives, mostly pleasant and undistressing. We do the best with what we have without too much complaint or ambition. Many of us however, find ourselves in the midst of events and experiences that trigger distress or restlessness, even depression or fear. We may even survive our traumas and crises sufficiently intact to carry on where we left off. But often, we emerge scarred, feeling at worst hopeless or at best mistrustful or suspicious of what life has to offer. Having lived through certain experiences and events, we now have emotional and mental wounds that have changed our perspective of life, of others, of ourselves.
